Description[]

SAHP has jurisdiction over the Highways of San Andreas. Officers patrol the roads using Police Bikes. Very rarely, they will answer a player's call to emergency services. They are based on the California Highway Patrol.

Behavior[]

SAHP behave just like other police in the game. They will aggressively comment if the player gets too close, flips them off, honks excessively, or insults them, then become hostile if the player doesn't move away. They will also respond if the player obtains a wanted level in their vicinity, or passes by them with one. If the player has a wanted level and moves away from the SAHP officers, any that spawned on a bike will pursue on it, however, the ones that spawned standing will only pursue on foot, though they may sometimes take NPC vehicles. If the player shoots a weapon or has a wanted level of two or higher, SAHP officers will shoot their Pistols at the player. Occasionally, SAHP officers may respond if the player calls 911. Additionally, they will shoot Cougars on sight.

Several cut dialogues of the Police Scanner and Highway Patrol show that they originally were able to pursue the player for speeding, reckless driving, running red lights, driving a suspicious vehicle, breaking a traffic law, crashing into other cars, and riding a motorcycle without a helmet on. These were likely removed for gameplay purposes. Additionally, cut dialogue shows that they were somehow able to pursue players in boats.

Locations[]

The San Andreas Highway Patrol does not operate any stations, but they are seen patrolling highways in GTA V and GTA Online.

  • One SAHP officer can be seen ending a traffic stop on the Palomino Freeway next to the train bridge and NOOSE Headquarters between 11 AM and 6 PM.
  • One SAHP officer can be seen watching the Senora Freeway through binoculars next to the Senora Freeway and Route 68 interchange between 11 AM and 3 PM.
  • Two SAHP officers can be seen on the side of the Senora Freeway next to Davis Quartz between 3 PM and 6 PM. One will be sitting on their motorcycle while the other is standing and holding coffee.
  • Two SAHP officers can be seen on the side of the Senora Freeway south of Grapeseed between 7 AM and 11 AM. One will be sitting on their motorcycle while the other is standing and holding a phone.
  • Two SAHP officers can be seen on the side of Route 1 south of the Paleto Forest between 3 PM and 10 PM. One will be sitting on their motorcycle while the other is standing and holding coffee.
  • Three SAHP officers can be seen in Raton Canyon on a ledge south of the Altruist Camp, as part of the Thelma and Louise Easter egg, between 7 PM and 8 PM. They will be standing next to two Sheriff Cruisers and accompanied by an IAA agent and two NOOSE members in a helicopter that can change between a Buzzard and a Police Maverick.

Uniform[]

Two variations of the San Andreas Highway Patrol uniform exist. Both are made up of a cream shirt, silver tan pants with a blue and gold stripe going down the side of each leg, and an equipment belt. One variation has a blue tie, while the other does not. Additionally, these uniforms interchange between work boots and work shoes.

The equipment belt carries items such as a weapon, handcuffs, and radio with a shoulder mic attachment. As their primary vehicle is a motorcycle, officers wear a blue and bronze helmet, and sun glasses for protection. The patches on the uniforms read 'Los Santos Highway Patrol'. This is likely a developer oversight, as a number of signs in GTA V erroneously refer to San Andreas as 'Los Santos State'.

Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips dress up as SAHP officers during the mission I Fought the Law... The uniforms can be found in their wardrobe after the mission. Wearing it will not stop police from becoming aggressive towards the player, nor will it prevent them from getting a wanted level during normal gameplay. This is false only in Director mode. If the player wears the uniform during the heist prep mission Stingers, however, they will be able to walk into the Davis Sheriff's Station without getting a wanted level.

Trivia[]

  • The logo of the SAHP is almost identical to that of its real life counterpart, the CHP; the only exception is that the word 'Eureka' is excluded.
  • In the X360/PS3 editions, they are the only officers that will shoot at the player from a moving vehicle while at a 2 and 3 star wanted level.
  • If the player enters Director mode as an SAHP actor and sets the wanted level to "low", neither LSSD or LSPD will attack the player regardless of what they do. Attacking multiple officers will result in them turning hostile, however. NOOSE units will attack the player regardless of whether they are a SAHP actor or not.
  • When gaining a wanted level next to them, officers will sometimes refer themselves as the LSPD.
    • The SAHP officers announcing themselves as the LSPD could possibly hint that the SAHP was originally the motorcycle division of the LSPD.
    • This is further reinforced by their police bikes having "Obey & Survive" printed on them, the LSPD's motto.
