Very sad to hear this news! He was such a great human and I learned a lot about what that means from him! He spent time with us outside class and really invested time and care with his students.

Everybody has a family. My lifetime partner, Rex mentioned to a reporter below and I absolutely agree with his thoughts. "We as human beings want to always divide ourselves and put ourselves in these different camps. These are Russians; these are Ukrainians. These are Japanese; these are Americans. These are Chinese. And these are Jewish, and these are Catholic. But the truth of the matter is, we're all humans. We all have family. We all have parents. We all have this family love in these connections."– Rex Ziak, co-founder of the Obon Society#family #love #peace #friendship #reconciliation

The concept of AI representing an extinction level event for for-profits… maybe for workers, but not for capital. Really interesting ideas in here worth thinking about and I’m always a sucker for looking at nonprofits in a different/innovative/positive way.

Out with the OLD and in with the NEWAs we wave goodbye to 2023 and reside it to the archival shelves and vaults of history. We look back on the year we have had.AGRHistory has had a varied year of research, covering a full and varied number of documents. From the usual birth, marriage, death certificates and census records to: -Wills, Court documents, Chancery Pleadings, Land registry, military records, non-conformist records, church and poor law records, bomb damage maps, graveyard maps and graves stones transcriptions, property research as well as area maps old and present.Documents that covered over sixteen counties in #England and #Wales. Plus, other countries including #Australia, #America, #France, #Ireland, and #India. The research has found hard to find ancestors and ancestors totally unknown about. It has proven family tree lines that were previously wrong and created branches that are correct and full. It discovered burials on foreign soil and uncovered unknown histories for not just distant ancestors but close relations. It unearthed family feuds, tragedies, scandal, and sadness as well as stories of love, compassion, duty, and kindness. In March taking part again as a session speaker in the International #RootsTech conference part of FamilySearch. As well as attending, though sadly in the end remotely, due to family circ*mstances, in #DCDC23 held by the The British Library, The National Archives, UK and Jisc.On top of this, help through social media awareness and campaigns to celebrate a Veteran’s 105th birthday. Raising awareness of the successful campaign to Save the VC Scarf Medal, from sale abroad. Help to rescue the RAF Firefighters Museum, an ongoing campaign, to give this museum a permanent home. Plus, many more articles that covered many and varied aspects of genealogy, history, heritage, archives, museums, Royal British Legion and Commonwealth War Graves Commission. As we party in the New Year of 2024, there are already many and exciting roads of research to be taken and articles to be written. So, all that is left to say is: -Happy New Year to All my contacts and followers. #Research #Records #Genealogy #History #Heritage #Ancestry #Archives #Museums #RAFFirefightersMuseum #NewYear #AGRHistory

Vice President for JewishGen at the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust

Dear JewishGen Community,For many years, an ongoing topic of discussion is how we could broaden the reach of JewishGen, and make it more accessible to “not yet” genealogists. To this end, we have initiated a number of new programs the past few years to meet this goal, such as holiday companion publications, a fellowship program to train the next generation of Jewish genealogical leaders, and a Neshama study/volunteer trip to Poland for those “out of school.” The result has been tremendous, and something we are continuing to build upon. Now, we are excited to launch one of our most ambitious efforts yet - the creation of a physical space whereby people can come, speak to JewishGen specialists, and learn about the tools they can use to perform research on their own. This new center will be located within the Museum of Jewish Heritage in NY, of which JewishGen is an affiliate. It will give us the opportunity to engage with the more than 100k annual visitors to the Museum, including many Jewish school groups from throughout the tri-state area in NY.The center will be a home for education and preservations. With access to JewishGen and a number of other major databases, all for no cost, visitors to the center can learn from experts how to get started, and delve deeper into their family history. But we need your help to make this a reality. Thanks to the generosity of Peter and Mary Kalikow, Vice Chair of the Museum Board, and who has been a strong and passionate supporter of JewishGen for many years,we have been given seed money to hire a consulting Director who is creating training, staffing and volunteer programs, along with engaging potential partner organizations. But we still need to raise additional funds to build the facility, and cover construction costs, equipment and technology purchases, additional staffing, internships, and other expenses related to the ongoing operations. As such,we are asking for your support to make this project a success. A gift ofany amount will make a difference, and help us build a center that will connect many more generations. You can easily donate online byclicking here: https://lnkd.in/eAAjtPKm. If you would like to send a check, please make it payable to JewishGen, write “Kalikow Center” in the memo, and send to:JewishGen36 Battery PlaceNew York, NY 10280Thank you for considering this important project. With your help, we can create a lasting legacy for Jewish families everywhere. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out anytime via email or by sending me a text at 973-433-6012.Sincerely,Avraham--Avraham GrollExecutive DirectorJewishGenEdmond J. The perfect gift for the preservationists in your life, including yourself: the Messaging Guide for Local Preservation Programs! It's free, requires no shipping, takes up zero space, won't add to your waistline or give you a hangover, and keeps on giving. I had the joy of developing the guide with the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions and dozens of colleagues over the past year. Even if you don't work for a local preservation program, you'll find tips on general messaging and reaching different audiences, talking points on issues like affordable housing and climate action, key considerations for equitable communications, and current thoughts on common terms like "character" and "historic preservation" itself. Many thanks to NAPC for making effective communications a priority, and to the dozens of peer reviewers nationwide who contributed your keen insight. Enjoy, and let me know what you think!🎁 Download it now at https://lnkd.in/gvFgXwuYHappy holidays!#historicpreservation #messaging

*INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY*Today, we celebrate the rich heritage of Indigenous communities that have thrived in the United States for generations. This day, often recognized as an alternative to Columbus Day, honors their enduring cultures and contributions.Indigenous Peoples' Day acknowledges the fact that Indigenous communities have inhabited the Americas for thousands of years, long before the arrival of European explorers. It recognizes their deep historical and cultural connections to the land.- - - DID YOU KNOW?- - -The Winnebago, also known as "Hochungra" or "People of the Big Voice," were a Siouan people who once occupied southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. They experienced territorial losses to Anishinabe tribes in the 1500s, leading to fragmentation, economic dependence on European goods, and population decline. The Ho-Chunk actively supported Tec*mseh's pan-Indian rebellion and the War of 1812 but faced ongoing challenges as miners encroached on their land despite peace treaties. The Black Hawk War of 1832 and subsequent treaties forced the Winnebago from their homeland, resulting in their relocation to multiple reservations, with the largest group settling in Jackson County, Wisconsin. While some Ho-Chunk resisted removal and remained on their homelands, others faced significant hardships during the relocation process. Today, the Wisconsin Ho-Chunk are descendants of those who resisted.Explore the Ho-Chunk's history and artifacts through these avenues:-Learn more about Ho-Chunk history by visiting https://lnkd.in/gZMwUapa-Visit the Sun Prairie Historical Museum, open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
