ANTIDEPRESSANT EFFECT OF ZIZIPHUS MAURITANIA AGAINST FORCED SWIM TEST INDUCED DEPRESSION IN WISTAR RATS

Chronic stress increases disease susceptibility to depression and other neurodegenerative disorders. Depression is characterized by disturbances in emotions, cognition, autonomic and endocrine functions affecting 21% of the world's population. The present investigation aimed to explore the antidepressant effect of ethanolic extract of Ziziphus Mauritania (EEZM) against forced swim test induced depression in wistar rats. Rats were administered with EEZM in the doses of 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg daily orally and subjected to forced swim test. The study is carried out for 14 days. EEZM administration reduced the immobility duration in forced swim test. Neurobehavioural alterations were assessed using elevated plus maze and open field exploration and treatment with EEZM averted behavioural despair. Increased TBARS level and decreased antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, Gpx and Catalase levels due to stress were observed. Administration with EEZM reversed all these deleterious effects and raised SOD, Gpx and Catalase levels. Thus the present observation indicates the antidepressant activity of EEZM. Further neurochemical and molecular studies would unravel the possible mechanisms involved in antidepressant activity of EEZM.

Anti-depressant Activity of the Seeds of Zanthoxylum armatum on Swiss Albino Mice

Introduction: Depression disorder has significant potential morbidity and mortality, contributing to suicide, incidence and adverse outcomes of medical illness, disruption in interpersonal relationships, substance abuse, and lost work time. Objectives: The present study was designed to study the anti-depressant activity of the seeds extract of Zanthoxylum armatum using a forced swim test and tail suspension test on Swiss albino mice. The anti-depressant activity of the seeds of Zanthoxylum armatum was assessed using Chronic Unpredictable Mild-Stress (c*ms) induced depression in mice. Methods: The animals were treated with the methanolic extract of seeds of Zanthoxylum armatum orally at two doses of 100, 200mg/kg body weight for eight days after c*ms induced depression in mice. Though Caralluma dalzielii N.E Br (Asclepiadaceae) is widely used traditionally for treating nervous system disorders, there is an absence of scientific reports about its pharmacological effect against depression. In this work, the potential antidepressant effects of the methanol extract of the aerial parts of Caralluma dalzielii were evaluated in mice using behavioral models (tail suspension and forced swimming tests) sensitive to clinically effective antidepressant agents. The extract at the doses of 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg body weight (intraperitonially) was able to significantly (p< 0.05) decrease the immobility time of mice in a non-dose dependent and dose dependent manner when subjected to both tail suspension and forced swimming tests respectively and the effects were comparable to the effect produced by the standard drug imipramine (10mg/kg). Objective: Pimpinella anisum (P. anisum) has different pharmacological properties such as anticonvulsant, analgesic, tranquilizer, antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects. In this study the antidepressant-like effect of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of P. anisum fruit in mice was investigated. Materials and Methods: Forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) were used to determine the antidepressant effects of P. anisum (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, i.p.) fruit extracts. Fluoxetine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) and imipramine (30 mg/kg, i.p.) were used as standard drugs. Results: All the three doses of aqueous and ethanolic extracts (except 50 mg/kg of aqueous extract in FST) significantly and dose-dependently reduced the immobility times in both FST and TST. A Cognitive Approach to Translation of Conceptual Metaphors in Documentary Films

The present paper favors a cognitive approach to metaphor launched by Lakoff and Johnson’s influential book, Metaphors We Live By (1980). The aim of the study is to identify the aspects of similarities and differences of conceptual expressions between the source and target languages, and try to explore the translation strategies used by the translators based on the most outstanding translation hypothesis proposed by Kovecses (2005). The corpus comprises two collections of documentary films which are nine hundred minutes altogether. The results obtained from the comparison of linguistic and cultural peculiarities of the metaphorical expressions between the two languages revealed that similarities in metaphorical expressions increase translatability, while differences hinder the translation process. Since the beginning of humankind, people are using numerous plants to cure diseases and abnormalities. Bacopa monnieri has been used by people for a long time. This plant has several medicinal and biochemical properties which would be beneficial to treat diseases. The current review article summarizes the medicinal, presence of the bioactive compound, mechanism of action, therapeutic importance, clinical trials, ethnobotanical usage, and distribution of the plant with respect to India and worldwide. Relevant information and literature on Bacopa monnieri were extracted from different sources and their finding were discussed in the manuscript. The number of therapeutic properties of the plant has been seen in the animal model experiment including anti-diarrheal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-convulsant, hepatoprotective, antiulcer, anti-depressant, anti-hyperglycemic and anti-nociceptive activity, immunostimulatory activity, and wound healing activity. This article recapitulates ethnopharmacological uses of Bacopa monnieri to explore its therapeutic potentials thereby providing a basis for future research. Bacopa monnieri exhibits a comprehensive of pharmacological activities that could be observed by the presence of a vast range of chemical constituents. Manuscript also comprises tissue culture techniques and propagation of Bacopa monnieri. The study also provides a descriptive outlook on the uses of Bacopa monnieri in wastewater treatment. This review article highlights the endless possibilities present in the plant and also sheds light on research that has not yet been done on this plant and may prove useful if done in the future.
